It is an interesting experience as an artist when the intent of your work is received and expressed back to you from the audience.

CXPA and I started by giving ourselves simple but concrete rules.
First rule: We would only use new audio/video recordings and take only a small amount of the 'found sounds' and visuals to extrapolate out the entirety of the project from those few things.
Second rule: We wouldn't let the light of our projections touch the edge of the screen until the end of the presentation. (This is like not breaking the third wall in acting, by not showing the boundaries of our screen, we could make the room feel as if there were no boundaries)

Each of the four groups involved in the Light + Sound production were working with the over arching theme of opposite, of 'light and dark' of 'near and far'. CXPA and I wanted to be the bridge between these opposites. We quickly adopted the 'bridge' as our little theme and set off to record some of the bridges spanning the Missouri River. We used a one minute twenty second long recording of us walking down by the river under the Christopher S. Bond Bridge and from this source material we chopped and cut and reversed sound until we had kicks and high hats and melodies and atmosphere.
The video came together in much the same way, using snippets of video from a car ride and of a crowd at an art show. Layers, colors and shapes mingled till the triangle emerged, a derivative of a pencil drawing of a cable-stayed bridge. The idea of the bridge became a bridgeway or a portal and everything would happen with in that portal. The darkness around this portal played just as much a role as anything going on inside. The later moments when light does reach beyond the center and out to the edges of the screen becomes that much more moving.

We presented our work dressed as 'Time Portal Monks' doing, what must be the typical rituals of such a time a place, and performed our parts down on our hands and knees facing the opening portal, our backs to the audience, unaware of their presence.

It is amazing that with no explanation or prompting from us, the audience grasped the feelings of moving through time and space, and I had the great pleasure of more than one kind stranger coming up to me afterwards telling me they felt as if they were moving through time and space and were really there experiencing the opening of a portal, even using that very word.

CXPA and I are both fond of this work and revisited the original recordings some months ago and wanted to be able to release it out to the world beyond the Light + Sound event. We decided to take the original sounds and create a side B for our work and also asked a few of the other artist from the event to contribute remixes. XWilson came in for some studio sessions over a few days while we gave Red Panda snippets from our live set and a two hour time limit to wonder the streets of the West Bottoms and create a brand new interpretation.

We are happy to present these works to you now as we prepare for another great Intelligent Sound, FUKLYFE, UN/TUCK, Wavelength, and Light+Sound event Friday April 13th.
